The fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps exemplifies 'la dolce vita'. It is a great piece of architecture and a grand urban focal point. But I think the main reason millions of tourists flock to this beautiful fountain is not only because of its architecture, but because this fountain helps us enjoy the 'good life'. It is a visually & socially exciting place while at the same time providing a tranquil & soothing getaway from the hustle & bustle of Rome. The sound of the fountain almost blocks out the sounds of the city and creates an oasis in the middle of Italy's most hectic city. This fountain pleases the soul, while exciting the eye.
Adding a stone fountain can do the same for your home. Not only can it make a dramatic statement in your courtyard, entry or patio, but the tranquil sound of water trickling can really soothe your soul after a hectic day at the office. If you imagine your fountain big and grand OR just simple & serene, you can bring elegance & style to your home while enhancing your living environment.
A well through out design for your fountain will enhance the looks of your home & will give you many years of enjoyment to sit around your fountain. It should also satisfy your soul! How you use your fountain & how you live with it are very personal choices. When selecting a fountain, choose one that not only blends in with the design of your home, but one that also will give you the ambiance that you are trying to create. For example: - Small Space/Office: Place a small, shallow bowl filled with rocks and a small bubbler-type fountain (like an oriental desktop rock fountain). It will bubble up and splash on the rocks, creating a very soothing, subtle sound. Place it on your desktop or on a shelf across the way so that you have it within view whenever you need a quick visual queue to relax.
- Small Yard: You can create a simple fountain with a Lion's Head plaque hung on the wall, spilling water into a pedestal basin below. This creates a relaxing, out of the way spot to go to and read a book.
- Larger Yard, Courtyard or Pool Deck: The same Lion's Head can be one of the elements of a much larger fountain. The most common example is the three-tier fountain. The water spills over one bowl onto the next & finally onto the larger basin. It can become a more elaborate centerpiece that adorns your patio.
Whatever your needs are, add a piece of the 'good life' to your environment. Make your environment satisfy not only your eye but also your soul.
Most of all, have fun creating YOUR dream fountain!
